Palastine Bethlehem

Short profile:

  • Destination:Bethlehem, Palestine
  • Short description:Meaningful leisure activities and pedagogically supervised skateboard workshops
  • Organisation:skate-aid e.V. München
  • Local partner:SOS Children´s Villages Bethlehem
  • Project period:2013 - now

The project

skate-aid wants to improve the situation of the traumatized children of Bethlehem together with SOS Children’s Villages. At the skate park, the kids should have the opportunity to let off steam and strengthen their sense of belonging when dealing with others.
The park was built on the outskirts of the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School. This can also ensure the integration of sports activities into a pedagogical framework. While the kids are more interested in skateboarding and physical activity, older teenagers receive special support through social programs and at the same time experience community spirit within the group.

The SOS Children's Village Bethlehem is located near the historic village of Shepherd's Field in the West Bank. Apart from political instability and the prevailing violence, the area suffers from a high unemployment rate and a high level of poverty. When the skate park was built, the young people actively supported the construction work. As a result, they learned basic crafting techniques and developed a positive relationship with the project right from the start. The project focuses on a close connection between formal and informal education, leisure and sport.

The project was started by skate-aid e.V. München. skate-aid international e.V. has been implementing the project since May 2019.

UPDATE:

In June 2021 we could finally start again with our skateboard workshops in Bethlehem/Palestine. After a break of over 12 months, we finally got back on the board! The skate park is located near the historic site of Shepherd's Field in the West Bank. Aside from the political instability and prevalent violence, the area suffers from a high unemployment rate and poverty level. During the construction of the skate park, the young people actively supported the construction work. Like this, they learned basic handicraft techniques along the way and developed a positive relationship with the project right from the beginning. The focus is on a close link between formal and informal education, leisure and sports. 2021 it is not possible to send international volunteers to our project to supervise it on site. We were even more happy to win a new cooperation partner: SkatePal x skate-aid! Our friends from SkatePal support us in Palestine! Together we empower the kids in Bethlehem! We’re very happy that our mission will continue and that we will be able to take care of up to 300 kids during our workshops every year!
