The situation

Mozambique, located in South-East Africa, is a rather divided country. On one hand the economy of Mozambique is one  of the fastest-growing national economies in Africa but on the other hand there still live 70 percent of the population in total poverty. With an annual income per head of 400 US-Dollar Mozambique still belongs to the poorest countries in the world. More than one third of the population is undernourished. In particular natural catastrophes beyond corruption and a bad infrastructure are the basic causes of permanent throwbacks in the progress of the country. Around 44 percent of the Mozambique are younger than 14 years; half of the adults are illeterates. There is a lack of health care and the HIV prevalence rate of 12,5 percent among adults is worrying.

According to UNICEF there are 1,5 Mio orphans in Mozambique and from these orphans there are 470 000 children who lost their parents due to AIDS. Still 6 percent of the children who are younger than five years own a certificate of birth. As a consequence of this millions of children who don’t own a certificate of birth are victims of abuse, child‘s work, forced marriages or have to serve as child soldiers. The rising social inequality and a lack of perspectives cause the situation that many children get involved in criminal activities or drug abuse.
